An Ideal Day

Sundays in our household start out well, but often by noon both of us are in a funk. I was thinking this might stem from a mismatch in how we’d like to spend the day. We’re in agreement about coffee and paper, but after that, we diverge. I usually want Mr. Bunny’s help with some yard or home improvement project, he usually wants to lounge around. Neither of us wants to go grocery shopping. So we generally compromise, which results in neither of us getting what we really want. This weekend I suggested to Mr. Bunny that we give him an ideal day. That we simply do what he wanted to do instead of negotiating. Though I had to do the grocery shopping and didn’t get any yard work done, this plan worked out pretty well for me, too. We had brunch out, went to a movie, spent some time lying in the yard…not too shabby. It was almost as though getting to decide what he wanted to do made him more likely to choose fun things. In any event, my hope is that he will choose to return the favor some Sunday in the future.

Meanwhile, thanks for the awesome music recommendations! I look forward to making some new friends and chillin’ with some old ones.

  1. brilliant. compromise is seriously overrated. i want you to know that i attended my second graduation ceremony of the season, and boy howdy did it suck. a highlight was the first student speaker, who ended her speech with "a quote from Eli Weasel."

  3. This sounds like us, only I'm the indolent one:) Sounds like a good day. I keep trying to convince my husband: one day of work, one day of play. But we haven't entirely reached agreement on how to do this. And, hopefully, you get a CHEERFUL Mr. Bunny next weekend, doing house chores:)

  4. Hahaha….this is totally us! I'm always like, "Let's go to home depot and order the shades" or "let's clean the deck" or "let's measure the wrought iron furniture and find some pillows to make sitting outside more comfie" etc. Hubs? He's like, "I want to play my computer game." Ha. That's awesome you found an unexpected way to get him to choose fun things. 🙂 Glad you had a great weekend.

  5. Sounds like a great Sunday, Bunny. We often start out Sundays in the sane fashion as you two before doing our own thing, only to come together later for a walk or run and a meal.I never commented on your music requests, individual song suggestions are tough so my recomendations are for entire albums, some of my faves which you may or may not know are: TV on the Radio's Dear Science, Tapes & Tapes The Loon, Vampire Weekend (not sure of album name but I do think it was mentioned by someone already) and Modest Mouse's Good News for People Who Love Bad News (an oldie but goodie).

  6. I love this idea – all or nothing! As long as you get your ideal day, too. My husband spends most weekends working while I pester him and chide him for working too hard :)Have fun on your road trip!

  7. My husband and I call them the "Sunday Sads". You made a great choice. Perhaps next weekend, Mr. Bunny will do what you want!

  8. Oooh, I love those days where you put yourself into someone's hands. They usually do turn out to be really really fun. This is a great idea, and i am going to copy it with E. Although E usually has most of the ideas around our house anyways, but I am usually a reflexive nay-sayer… so it would be fun to just be total putty in his recreation-designing hands. And to think of what I would do if we just did what i wanted… hmmm. Probably go on a long hike, which is one thing that I am usually the instigator on, as well as the prodder for 'just a bit further' when we do actually hit the trail.

  9. I especially like that you guys enjoyed the yard (instead of working on it). I gotta try that!

I am the Mr. Bunny of my relationship, although KB sometimes gets on board with my less-is-more approach. Unfortunately, I usually get an itch to do useful or ambitious things just as he's ready to nap in a lounge chair. *le sigh* Maybe you should cut a deal to trade Sundays…every other week, you can trade off agendas and make plans for both of you. It's a good thought I think, in theory at least.

  11. Mr. Stick and I are usually going to the extremes of either workaholicking or completely slothing it on Sundays. Fortunately we're usually in agreement, but unfortunately this means NOTHING ever gets done around the house and yard. We haven't really touched our garden since um…2006. So I'm glad at least one of you is on the ball with the home projects – hopefully you can take turns getting things done and lying around like a bump on a log.

  12. Sounds like a great day, and hopefully next Sunday it's your turn. We are like Stickles – usually both working like crazy or totally exhausted. But we also both want to work in the garden. It's also "mufti night" in our house which means no-one has to cook dinner. So we usually try to cram in some fun, then it ends with a glass of wine and cheese for dinner. Very civilised.

Glad you had a great weekend. I feel like I often set the agenda around here – maybe I should give hubs a day like this too 🙂

  16. Excellent plan. Must try this at home and compare notes. I don't even know what my one would like to do – am just a bit nervous it'd involve a large amount of hiking. We must give it a go and see.
