I’m not as smart as I think I am

I know you’ve all been tossing and turning, unable to sleep until you knew what had happened with my terrible little plagiarist. WELL! I met with her yesterday and informed her she’d be getting an F on the assignment due to the fact that her new paper still contains plagiarism. She signed the report form admitting responsibility with no particular reluctance, or show of emotion, or really anything. But something she said made me go back and look over all the weekly papers she’d been writing over the course of the semester. I suppose most of you in the teaching profession would have done this long ago. For whatever reason, it didn’t occur to me that she could possibly have plagiarized BEFORE! But BOY HAD SHE! Almost all her papers (these are little one-pagers) had cases where she’d pasted stuff from websites into her assignment. So no wonder she thought she could get away with it! She totally HAD. No wonder she thought she could fool me! She totally HAD. Uggh.

Anyway, I’m done with the little WHORE and am passing her off to other bodies. I have more important shit to do. Like worry about my fetus. Think of me on Monday morning, as I’ll be having a major moment of truth.

  1. Well, that should clear up any bad feeling you may have felt for reporting her!

  3. Wow, so she's failing the whole course, not just the assignment, right? When I was in college, we had to sign a pledge…cheating or plagiarizing meant immediate expulsion! Do they still do that kind of thing? Hers was pretty brazen, too! Not just the one-time offense I-was-too-busy-to-do-the-assignment-properly-so-I-took-a-shortcut-and-hoped-noone-would-notice, but do it all semester long…WOW.

  4. Oh, good. I'm glad she's failing. She had that coming.

  5. whoa. it's hopelessly naive that i don't keep copies of their short writing, huh? oops.

  6. Wow, she has been doing that all semester, amazing. I never had the guts to do something like that. I was always straight laced. Glad you caught her.

  7. Ugh. Fail her. And good luck for Monday!

  8. I have that mix of caution, hope and anticipation (which there should surely be a word for) on your behalf, for Monday..You were dead right to give the Plagiarist the heave-ho. After all, it's a matter of being fair to the other students who DO make an effort, as well. HMPH.

  9. Kids these days. So full of entitlement. I can't believe her gull. With that kind of reasoning, you really don't have to even attend university, read any books or articles, or anything. You just do some copying and pasting, email your professors some "assignments" and voila, bob's you're uncle. Glad she's out of your hair and dealing with other bodies. I will SO be thinking of you on Monday morning. It was already on my radar, but I'm glad for the reminder. I hope you can relax this weekend and not think constantly about the potential for bad news. Is there not some hilarity you could watch or something? Give bun bun a little laughter massage! We should collaborate on a research paper on the strong emotions related to infertility. Let's see, how's this for a title: If I get another baby shower invitation, I will kill someone: Indignant rage in the infertile (Bunny, G & Augusta, A., 2011). I think NIMH will be all over it.

  10. Good! I'm glad she's getting an F! Good luck on Monday Bunny! I'm sure little Bun Bun will be just fine and you'll fall in love just a little more when you see how much Bun Bun actually LOOKS like a baby now! I can't wait to check in with you to see how it went!

Give her a 0. That's worse than an F. I'm sure every little ting is gonna be alright on Monday. Grow, little bunny, grow. I'll be waiting to check the secret page! 😉

  12. Think about using Turnitin (if it's available). Then you won't have to wonder. I don't think this person was trying to fool you; I think she just doesn't get it, and if she doesn't show much emotion it's because she erroneously thinks of this kind of thing as being outside of her control.

  13. Don't waste any more energy on the plagiarist, instead I hope Monday's appointment is fantastic.

  14. This has happened to me. Drives me crazy. Drives me crazy that I look and that I'm subsequently disappointed. But most of all, that it happens.(Incidentally, I caught someone who'd sailed under the radars of much more experienced profs…then others realized it was part of a larger pattern. Wow. Talk about uncomfortable moments among colleagues.)You've actually done her a favor, Bunny. I'm guessing this will be passed up the chain of command and she'll have to explain herself to others in a more formal setting. That's going to be scarier for her. And that's a good thing. Because it's going to make her think twice in the future. The best part: it's off your plate. And that is excellent. Let others worry about it.

  19. I read this earlier on my droid but I can't post on that thing worth a damn. I am finally at a real computer. That girl should have thought twice about being such an ass. What is wrong with her? I'm glad you figured it all out in the end and I don't think you should give yourself a hard time about not figuring it out at the get go. I hope tomorrow is great.

  20. I don't think you can blame yourself for having confidence in the integrity of your students! It sucks that this bad seed is making you question yourself. Stick with your gut!So annoying….Anyway, good luck today! Can't wait for the update on Bun-Bun!

  21. The very first semester I taught intro. to literature at Temple University back in 2004 one of my students plagiarized. I was young and felt totally unprepared to deal with a student lying so badly. But I ended up confronting her, she denied it, which then forced me to report her to my department head who then had me report her to academic affairs. Long story short, the girl continued to deny she plagiarized and was taken to academic "court" where they found her guilty, she failed the course, had to take a mandatory class on plagiarism, and was put on academic probation for a year. It was the best thing I ever did. Glad you were able to report the little shithead. Don't they know it's fricken STEALING?
